Diretta FAQ consolidation

[Q-001] Is Diretta a music player?
No, Diretta is an audio signal transfer protocol.
Diretta alone brings you no music unless it is combied with a music player or a renderer.
As Diretta transfers audio signal, there is always a pair of the Host and the Target.  The Host can be said as a transmitter (Tx), the Target a receiver (Rx), as can be seen in the world of communication technology.
The output of the music player is sent to the Diretta Host.  So long as the connection between the Diretta Host and the Target has been established properly, the Host and the Target can be regarded as a single unit.
-----------
[Q-002] How does a minimal configuration of Diretta look like?
In addition to the Diretta Host and the Target together with the LAN connection between them, you need
  1. music source
  2. a music player or a renderer
to feed audio signal to the Host, and
  3. audio interface
to receive the audio signal from the Target.
1. can reside on a different piece of hardware such as a NAS on your home network, or on the same machine on which 2. and the Diretta Host are running.
The output of 2. is fed to the Diretta Host.  They are usually on the same piece of hardware.
3. can be integrated with the Target as a network player, or any audio interface that works on the Target board can be connected theoretically.  The most common and easiest method is to use an x64 PC with the Target USB bridge program and to connect your favourite USB-DAC or DDC to it.
Thus, the following is an example of the minimal configuration you can enjoy Diretta with.
<Host-A: fidata/Soundgenic>
  music storage + a UPnP media server +
  a UPnP media renderer with Diretta output
<Host-B: Windows10 PC>
  music storage + a music player with ASIO output +
  the Diretta ASIO driver
  (ex. foobar2000 + ASIO component, Album Player, JRiver Media Center, Audirvana)
<Target-A: a network player/transport with Diretta Target function>
  no additional piece of equipment needed
<Target-B: x64 PC with the Target USB bridge software>
  + USB-DAC/DDC
<Target-C: a Target bridge as a stand-alone audio product>
  + USB-DAC/DDC
Please note that <Host-A> is realised only in fidata/Soundgenic at this moment.  Other so-called "music server" or "audio NAS" does not have a function of Diretta Host.  We have no plan to provide such a function for DIYers.  Audio equipment manufacturers are welcomed to inquire.
-----------
[Q-003] Is a driver for other operating systems coming?

As you may be aware, we offer end-users the ASIO driver for Windows 10.
The driver for Linux already exists.  It is for audio equipment and NAS manufacturers. You are welcomed to contact us on behalf of your company if you are in such a position.
The driver for Mac is very unlikely to come out due to the strict policy of Apple.  The only possibility to use a music player application for Mac with Diretta may be that the application would support the native Diretta output.

-----------
[Q-004] Is the Diretta Lucia module available for end-users?
No plan for end-users at this moment.  We have received this inquiry several times in the past.
End-users are requested to use the "Diretta Target USB bridge USB memory stick for x64 PC" or a Diretta Target as a stand-alone audio product.
-----------
[Q-005] How can I check the behaviour of the Diretta Host PC?
Among the several buttons on the right side of "Diretta ASIO configura" application, you see one marked with debug.
You must press it before starting the playback.
If you click it during the playback, it remains empty.  In this case, you must stop (and not pause) the playback and play again.  Then you will see log data appear in the window.
If you see "over time" occasionally or none at all, it means the playback is proper in the sense that Diretta is functioning as designed.
In case you see "over time" too often, your settings are not appropriate under your current environment.  Setting "Preset Profile" back to "TargetProfile" is expected to solve the issue.
Note that uninterrupted playback without noise does not mean proper settings.  Diretta is designed in such a way that it avoids the playback interruption as much as possible, even with degrading the playback quality.
-----------
[Q-006] How can I see the behaviour of the Diretta Target PC?
Press the "config" button of "Diretta ASIO configura" application.  A second window appears.  Clicking "dmesg" makes a third window pop up.
The characters you see there are the same as those which appear on a monitor if you connect one directly to the Target PC.
All the characters that have appeared so far are supposed to be displayed.
We had a service inquiry in the past that a certain main board with the default BIOS setting prevented the console messages from appearing.  If you use the product version purchased from us directly and encounter such a case, you can send us a service request.

One important topic if you are using at least Roon : the connection between the Target and the Host needs to be IPV6 for sure but i needed to add the IPV4 as Roon core was not discovered by the remote otherwise.
